The Sad, Sweet Song that Reminds Me of Kimble
There is a song that reminds me of Kimble. I think of it as Kimble's song. It's called "Graceful Ghost Rag." "Rag" means that the song is ragtime. Ragtime uses certain patterns and rhythms. Often, ragtime is fast and bouncy. In the case of the "Graceful Ghost Rag," this ragtime piece is slow, beautiful, and so sweet you could just cry. The "Graceful Ghost Rag" was written in 1971. The man who wrote it, William Bolcom, did so to remember his father who had died. I hear it's one of the hardest ragtime pieces to play on the piano! A pianist named John Roache recorded "Graceful Ghost." He provides us with a free sample. Click here to hear his 30-second sample. There are also a couple versions of "Graceful Ghost" up at YouTube. The short version was recorded by "mtriplea" on an electronic keyboard. Mtriplea plays just the A section of the ragtime piece (that's the first section), so this clip is only one and a half minutes long. I must say I love the sound quality of the electronic keyboard. It almost sounds like a harpsichord. Click here to watch the video at YouTube. Or click on the screen below to see it from this page. Also on YouTube is a full-length version (5 minutes) of "Graceful Ghost." This was recorded at the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival. The man playing the piano is a gifted concert pianist named Richard Dowling. He plays all the sections of the song on a grand piano. You will notice that he plays this sweet, delicate song very gently and lovingly. I've never heard a more perfect version of "Graceful Ghost." Click here to watch the video at YouTube.
