Katie & Kimble Go Green! (Katie & Kimble: The Magic Wish, for ages 7-10)

Katie & Kimble Go Green!
You might not notice how “green” the Katie & Kimble: A Ghost Story chapter book series is until you get to the second book, Katie & Kimble: The Magic Wish.
In the second Katie & Kimble
book, we discover that the Russell family is trying to eat healthier
foods. Can you think of an example? That’s right—they only have pizza
on special occasions and they don’t eat much red meat anymore.
Katie’s
family also cares about the earth and about all living things, like
trees. For example, when Katie’s dad does the grocery shopping, he
takes cloth bags with him. No paper or plastic for him! And when he
puts up a swing on the old oak tree in the backyard, he’s very careful
not to harm the tree and he doesn’t use any nails at all.
Mr. Russell also shows how much he cares about the earth when he sings one of his favorite songs in Katie & Kimble: The Magic Wish. It’s called “For the Beauty of the Earth.” It’s a beautiful old hymn. You can listen to free samples of the song here.

Funny Stories about the Author of Katie & Kimble: A Ghost Story!

Funny Stories about the Author of Katie & Kimble!
Hi! My name is Linda Thieman and I'm the author of the Katie & Kimble books. I thought the Katie & Kimble readers might like to know what my childhood was like.
When I was a kid, my
dad would try just about anything. One time, my mom got us
these new vitamins. They looked like candy, but you couldn't chew
them. My sister and I knew they would taste terrible.
But one morning, my dad saw
the new vitamins and he wanted to try one. We said, "Don't chew it!" but he didn't
care. So he popped a vitamin in his mouth and started chewing. Oh my
gosh, the look on his face was so funny. His nose crinkled up and he
chewed it as fast as he could. Then he agreed that it was better not
to chew the vitamin! I was 8 when that happened.
I also wrote three more true stories for you to read. They are on the right sidebar of the Katie & Kimble blog in the Activity Corner.
The first one is
from when I was 7 and it's a funny story about my dog, my dad and my little sister. In this story, my dad plays a trick on our dog to see what the dog will do!
The second one is from when I was 8 and it's about my dad and a funny trick we played with a piano!
The third one is from when I was 9 and we lived across the street from a baseball player. He played third base for the Minnesota Twins. That was a lot of fun!

Hear the Dreidel Songs! Katie & Kimble: A Ghost Story, for ages 7-10
by
Linda Thieman

Hear the Dreidel Songs!
In
Katie & Kimble: A Ghost Story, Book 1 in the Katie & Kimble
series, Kimble teaches Katie how to play dreidel.
Dreidel is a game that Jewish children play during Hanukah.
Dreidels
come in many sizes with many different designs and colors. The dreidel
pictured on the left is called a Noah's Ark dreidel because the
pictures tell the story of Noah's Ark. It was painted by an artist
named Yair Emanuel. It's got a little stand to hold it up.
The
dreidel on the right is really something amazing to see. It's very big
- 10 inches high, in fact - and it's a plush toy! I thought that was
pretty interesting. I don't suppose you can actually play dreidel with
such a big dreidel, but it might be comfy to keep on your bed!
In Katie & Kimble: A Ghost Story,
you learn how to play dreidel at the same time that Kimble teaches
Katie how to play. However, you might not know how to pronounce the
letters on the dreidel. I wanted Katie & Kimble readers to be able
to hear how to say the Hebrew letters. So, I made up a list of two
different dreidel songs from iTunes so you
can hear free samples. In the first Dreidel Song, in the chorus, they
sing all the different letters on the dreidel.
Dreidel Songs
Interesting Fact:
Hanukah is sometimes spelled in different ways! You might see it like
this, with 2 k's--Hanukkah--or you might see it like this, with a
c--Chanukah!

Why Twinkle is a Great, Big Dog! Katie & Kimble: A Ghost Story Series - (for ages 7-10)
by
Linda Thieman
on Thu 28 May 2009 04:36 PM CDT
Why Twinkle is a Great, Big Dog!
Our
Katie & Kimble readers know that Katie has a dog named Twinkle.
Katie named him Twinkle because he was silver, the color of the stars.
She thought that in the sunlight, he twinkled like a star.
Twinkle is a great, big dog. He is an Old English sheepdog. When I was
first writing Katie & Kimble: A Ghost Story, I needed to decide
what kind of dog Twinkle was going to be. I really needed a dog that
would protect Katie. If you have read Katie & Kimble: A Ghost
Story, you'll know why! Katie has a lot of adventures and gets into a
lot of trouble! It's a good thing Twinkle is there to protect her!
For hundreds of years, sheepdogs have been trained to protect sheep.
That is why they are so good with children. They make sure the child is
safe, too.
Sheepdogs have long hair that needs to be brushed a lot. Several years
ago, I worked with a woman who had a sheepdog. When she brushed his
hair, she saved the hair. Then later, she made the hair into a sweater
and wore it to work! Yeah, that really grossed me out, I must say.
Fun Katie & Kimble Hint: On the sidebars, click on the yellow stripes to hear Twinkle barking!

Meet Freddie, the Katie & Kimble Blog's Little Talking Host! (a chapter book series for ages 7-10)

Meet Freddie, the Katie & Kimble Blog's Little Talking Host!
This
is Freddie! She's the new talking host of the Katie & Kimble Blog.
If you turn on your speakers and click on her picture over on the left
sidebar, you can hear her recite the Kimble, Kimble Chant. (You can
find the words to the Kimble, Kimble Chant on the right sidebar of the
blog.)
If you place your cursor over Freddie's picture in the left sidebar,
she will follow it with her eyes. Also, you can click on her one time
and she will repeat her welcome. If you'd like to hear it more
than twice, you can close your browser for a little bit and come back
to it later. She will then speak again!
I named our new host Freddie
because there are two fictional characters I like who are named Freddy.
I am a big fan of the late author Georgette Heyer, and she wrote both Cotillion and Frederica, my two favorites, and both books have a very likable character named Freddy!
